TÚ COMMANDS: NEGATIVE AND AFFIRMATIVE

Unlike the Usted commands, the form of the TÚ commands depends on whether you are telling a person to do something (an AFFIRMATIVE command) or not do something (a NEGATIVE command). Your negative TÚ command is formed by adding –s to the negative USTED command:

Negative Usted CommandNegative Tú Command
ˇ No piense eso! ˇNo pienses eso!
ˇNo se siente! ˇNo te sientes!
ˇNo lo haga! ˇNo lo hagas!

*Affirmative REGULAR Tú Commands look like the él/ella/usted form of your verb in the present indicative. Remember, any pronouns should be attached directly to the end of your affirmative command, and a written accent is added to the stressed syllable of all verbs of two or more syllables.

Limpia tu cuarto.

Siéntate.

Come en la cocina.

Completa la tarea.

Vive en la ciudad conmigo.

*The following affirmative Tú Commands are irregular. Again, note that as with all verbs, the negative tú commands are formed by adding –s to the negative usted command:

Infinitive Affirmative Tú Negative Tú
Decir Di no digas
Hacer Haz no hagas
Ir Ve no vayas
Poner Pon no pongas
Salir Sal no salgas
Ser no seas
Tener Ten no tengas
Venir Ven no vengas

Javier, ven a la fiesta conmigo. No vengas con María.

Ana, pon la mesa en diez minutos. No la pongas ahora.

más paciente. No seas una persona imposible.

Ve al supermercado hoy. No vayas al centro comercial hasta mañana.

Sal de mi oficina. Lo siento….no salgas.
